Widely known as the inspiring woman by the side of the world-renowned artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), Emilie Flöge (1874–1952) is considered one of the most influential fashion designers of fin-de-siècle Vienna. Together with her sisters Helene and Pauline, she managed the fashion salon »Schwestern Flöge« situated on Vienna’s Mariahilfer Straße from 1904. The salon quickly established itself as a fashion hub for the Viennese bourgeoisie and won renown within the network of artists surrounding the Wiener Werkstätte and the Vienna Secession. Emilie Flöge wore her designs herself and made fashion statements that went beyond society’s norms, especially with her »reform dresses«. An advertiser, model and trendsetter, she presented the jewelry and epitomized the zeitgeist of the Wiener Werkstätte in the city and the countryside. This publication explores the multifaceted life of this successful and independent businesswoman, and traces her life in Vienna and on the Attersee, where Gustav Klimt and Emilie spent their summer holidays between 1900 and 1916. The book focuses on the life of the Flöge family, her business empire, Klimt’s correspondence with Emilie, on holiday snapshots and portraits from famous photographic studios as well as on Emilie’s passion for jewelry, fabrics and ethnological impulses.
